What is a total loss?
A total loss refers to a scenario in the insurance and automotive industry where a vehicle is deemed “totalled” or a “total loss” due to extensive damage from an accident, theft, or other incidents. When the cost of repairing the vehicle exceeds a certain percentage of its actual cash value (ACV) – the value of the vehicle before the incident – the insurance company may determine that it’s more cost-effective to declare the vehicle a total loss rather than repair it.
